Biography
Antoine Vollon was born on January 21, 1833, in Lyon. He trained at the Lyon École des Beaux-Arts under Michel Gomez before moving to Paris in 1859, where he came to the attention of Théodore Ribot. He established himself as one of the finest still-life painters of the second half of the 19th century, his work combining the rich tonal tradition of Chardin and the Dutch masters with a direct, painterly handling that shows awareness of Courbet.
Vollon's still lifes — Still Life with Onions (1877), Still Life with Cheese (1876), Still Life with Fish and a Copper Jug (1875), Still Life with a Copper Jug, Eggs and a Dish with Oysters (1875) — are distinguished by their warm tonal richness and their mastery of the specific textures of kitchen objects: dull copper, rough stone, the shimmer of fish scales, the matte surface of earthenware. His harbor views — Marseilles Harbour with a Lighthouse (1887) — and genre subjects extend his range. He died in Paris on August 27, 1900.
Artistic Style
Vollon's still lifes are built on a Dutch-Flemish foundation: dark backgrounds, strongly lit objects, warm palette of ochres, browns, and copper tones. His most characteristic works feature copper and brass vessels — jugs, pots, warming pans — rendered with extraordinary attention to their specific reflective properties. His handling is confident and relatively broad, creating rich impasto surfaces.
A Barn in a Landscape with Trees (1887) and Marseilles Harbour (1887) show his range beyond still life.

Things You Might Not Know
- •Vollon began his career as a metalworker and decorative craftsman before turning to painting in his mid-twenties — an origin that may explain his exceptional sensitivity to surface texture and material qualities.
- •He was regarded as the greatest still-life painter in France after Chardin, and his mounds of mussels, buttery cheeses, and gleaming copper pots became iconic images of French material culture.
- •Vollon was a close friend of Édouard Manet and moved in Impressionist circles without ever fully adopting their methods — his technique remained rooted in Old Master glazing and impasto.
- •He won the Légion d'honneur and was elected to the Institut de France, achieving establishment recognition unusual for a painter whose subjects were humble kitchen objects.
- •His painting 'Mound of Butter' in the National Gallery of Art is over a meter wide and treats its subject with the same grandeur as a history painting.
Influences & Legacy
Shaped By
- Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin — the supreme French still-life painter of the eighteenth century was Vollon's most important model for treating humble objects with monumental seriousness.
- Frans Hals and Rembrandt — Vollon absorbed Dutch Golden Age technique during study trips to the Netherlands, particularly their mastery of rapid, confident brushwork.
- Gustave Courbet — Courbet's material, tactile approach to paint and his rejection of idealization influenced Vollon's robust handling.
Went On to Influence
- French Realist still-life tradition — Vollon's synthesis of Old Master technique and direct observation helped sustain a serious tradition of still-life painting in France through the academic period.
- Norbert Goeneutte — younger French painters working in a naturalist vein were aware of Vollon's mastery and his example encouraged serious engagement with everyday objects.
