Biography

Charles Hoguet (1821–1870) was born in Berlin of French Huguenot descent. He studied at the Berlin Academy and later in Paris under Eugène Isabey, the French marine and landscape painter. He traveled extensively in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, and these travels profoundly influenced his art.

Hoguet specialized in coastal scenes, harbor views, and landscapes, producing works that combine Germanic precision with the atmospheric sensitivity of the French Barbizon school. His paintings of Dutch and Belgian harbors, fishing boats, and coastal scenes display genuine feeling for the maritime landscape and atmosphere of the North Sea coast.

He exhibited at the Berlin Academy and the Paris Salon, achieving recognition in both countries. He died in Berlin on 23 June 1870.

Artistic Style

Hoguet's paintings are characterized by their atmospheric sensitivity, careful observation of maritime subjects, and a palette influenced by both the Barbizon school and Dutch Golden Age marine painting. His coastal scenes capture the specific quality of North Sea light — its cool, silvery character and the constant interplay of cloud, water, and sky.

His brushwork is fluid and sensitive, particularly effective in rendering the textures of water, sand, and atmospheric effects. His compositions are well balanced, typically featuring low horizons that give prominence to expansive, cloud-filled skies.

Historical Significance

His work illustrates the international exchange of artistic ideas that characterized the period.
