Biography

Federico de Madrazo y Kuntz (1815–1894) was the leading Spanish Romantic portrait painter of the mid-nineteenth century. Son of José de Madrazo and father of Raimundo de Madrazo, he stood at the center of a four-generation Madrid painting dynasty. Trained in Paris under Ingres and Winterhalter, Federico produced refined portraits of Spanish royalty, aristocracy, and intellectual life, served as director of the Prado from 1860, and led the San Fernando Academy.

Artistic Style

Madrazo painted with the cool, polished line of Ingres applied to warm Spanish flesh tones and rich textile rendering. His portraits favor restrained pose, psychological reserve, and meticulous observation of jewelry, fabric, and lace.
