Biography
Federico Zuccari (c. 1540-1609) was an Italian Mannerist painter, architect, and art theorist who was one of the most prominent and internationally active artists of the late sixteenth century. Born in Sant'Angelo in Vado in the Marche, he trained under his elder brother Taddeo Zuccari in Rome and inherited the family workshop after Taddeo's death in 1566.
Federico completed the frescoes in the Sala Regia of the Vatican begun by his brother and went on to paint the dome of Florence Cathedral (the Last Judgment, completed 1579), one of the largest fresco cycles of the Cinquecento. He traveled widely, working in Venice, Florence, the Netherlands, England (where he painted portraits of Queen Elizabeth I and the Earl of Leicester), and Spain (at the Escorial for Philip II, though his work there was rejected).
Beyond his painting, Zuccari was important as an art theorist and institutional figure. He founded the Accademia di San Luca in Rome in 1593 and published L'Idea de' pittori, scultori et architetti (1607), an influential theoretical treatise. His career represents the internationalization of Italian Mannerism and the growing professionalization of artistic practice in the late sixteenth century.

His international career — working in England, the Netherlands, Spain, and throughout Italy — required adaptability to diverse patronage expectations.
Historical Significance
Federico Zuccari was one of the most internationally active and theoretically significant artists of the late sixteenth century. His founding of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome (1593) established one of the most important institutional frameworks for artistic training and professional organization in European art history. His theoretical treatise L'Idea de' Pittori, Scultori e Architetti articulated a sophisticated Mannerist theory of artistic creation centered on the concept of the disegno interno — the inner design or idea in the artist's mind. This theoretical contribution made him as influential as a thinker as he was as a practitioner, and his academy became the model for the subsequent development of European art academies.
