Lanfranco brought Correggio's illusionistic ceiling technique to Rome and Naples, inspiring Pietro da Cortona and the subsequent High Baroque tradition of painted domes and ceilings throughout Catholic Europe.
Biography
Giovanni Lanfranco (1582–1647) was an Italian Baroque painter who pioneered the illusionistic ceiling fresco that would dominate seventeenth-century church decoration. Born in Parma and trained under Agostino Carracci, Lanfranco absorbed the soft modeling and luminous color of Correggio before moving to Rome, where he absorbed the sculptural dynamism of Annibale Carracci. His dome fresco of the Assumption at Sant'Andrea della Valle (1625–1627) introduced Correggio's sotto in sù perspective to Rome on a monumental scale and established a new paradigm for baroque ceilings. Lanfranco later worked extensively in Naples, where his Gesù Nuovo frescoes profoundly influenced the Neapolitan Baroque. He was one of the most sought-after decorative painters of his age.
Artistic Style
Lanfranco united Emilian luminosity with Roman monumentality. His frescoes feature spiraling compositions seen from below, luminous clouds, radiant light sources, and figures rendered with soft Correggiesque modeling. Easel works show rich color, dramatic chiaroscuro, and expressive gesture.
Historical Significance
Lanfranco brought Correggio's illusionistic ceiling technique to Rome and Naples, inspiring Pietro da Cortona and the subsequent High Baroque tradition of painted domes and ceilings throughout Catholic Europe.
