Biography
Jaume Huguet was a Catalan painter born around 1412 in Valls, Tarragona, one of the most important painters of the fifteenth century in the Crown of Aragon. He became the leading painter of Barcelona during the mid-fifteenth century, producing magnificent altarpieces that represent the culmination of the Catalan Gothic painting tradition.
Huguet's altarpieces are distinguished by their rich gilding, vivid coloring, and the expressive characterization of their figures. He combined the decorative richness of the International Gothic with an emerging naturalism in the rendering of faces and settings that reflects awareness of Flemish developments. His major works include the Altarpiece of Sant Antoni Abat and the Altarpiece of the Constable, both masterpieces of Catalan painting.
Huguet ran a large workshop in Barcelona that produced altarpieces for churches across Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. He died in Barcelona in 1492.
Artistic Style
Huguet's painting represents the apogee of the Catalan Gothic tradition, combining sumptuous gilding and decorative richness with an increasingly naturalistic approach to the human figure and setting. His figures are rendered with strong, individualized features and expressive gestures, while his drapery shows an awareness of the softer, more naturalistic handling introduced by Flemish painters.
His palette is rich and vivid, with deep reds, blues, and greens set against elaborate gold backgrounds worked with intricate tooled patterns. His compositions are carefully structured to maximize narrative clarity and devotional impact, with figures arranged in spaces that show increasing spatial awareness.
Historical Significance
Jaume Huguet was the most important Catalan painter of the fifteenth century and one of the greatest artists of the Crown of Aragon. His altarpieces represent the highest achievement of the Catalan Gothic tradition, a distinctive artistic culture that developed in parallel with the better-known schools of Flanders and Italy.
His workshop system, which produced altarpieces on a large scale for churches across the Catalan lands, illustrates the organizational structure of late medieval artistic production. His influence on subsequent Catalan painting was profound.

- •He introduced Flemish oil technique and naturalistic detail to Catalan painting while maintaining the monumental scale and gilded splendor of the local altarpiece tradition.
- •The Confraria dels Blanquers (tanners' guild) of Barcelona commissioned one of his most important works, showing that artisan guilds as well as the church were major patrons.
