Biography
Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant was born on June 10, 1845, in Paris. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Alexandre Cabanel and won the second Prix de Rome in 1868. He traveled to Spain and Morocco in 1871–72, and Orientalist subjects from North Africa and the Ottoman world dominated his Salon career through the 1880s. His large Orientalist canvases — Judith (1886), Le jour des funérailles (1889) — combine elaborate settings and exotic costume with academic figure painting.
In his later career Benjamin-Constant became one of the most successful portrait painters in France and Britain, his international reputation extending to Canada and the United States. His Portrait of Emmanuel Arago (1888), Dr John Chapman (1885), and Esquisse for the Hôtel de Ville (1889) show his range from private to institutional commissions. He died in Paris on May 26, 1902.
