Biography

Józef Brandt (1841–1915) was a Polish history and battle painter who specialized in seventeenth-century Polish-Cossack and Tatar subjects rendered with vigorous movement and rich painterly handling. Active mostly in Munich, where he ran a substantial studio, Brandt became the most internationally successful Polish painter of his generation, exhibiting widely across Europe and the United States. His winter scenes and equestrian subjects are particularly celebrated.

Artistic Style

Brandt painted with bold, broad brushwork, dramatic skies, and deeply researched costume and weaponry. His compositions favor diagonal movement and explosive equestrian action.
