Nikolay Bogdanov-Belsky

Nikolay Bogdanov-Belsky (1868–1945) was a Russian painter best known for sympathetic genre scenes of peasant children and rural schoolrooms, especially the Sergei Rachinsky country school in Tatevo where he himself had been educated. His Mental Calculation: In Rachinsky's Public School (1895) became one of the most reproduced Russian genre paintings of the period. He emigrated to Latvia after 1921 and continued working in Riga and the Baltic countryside until his death during WWII evacuation in Berlin.

Bogdanov-Belsky painted with sensitive plein-air handling and warm earth-tone palettes, focusing on the inner life of his rural sitters. His later Latvian landscapes show looser, more impressionistic touch.

Bogdanov-Belsky produced the canonical visual record of late-imperial Russian rural childhood and education and became one of the most beloved Russian genre painters of his generation.
