Biography

Santiago Rusiñol (1861–1931) was a Catalan painter, writer, and dramatist who, with Ramon Casas, led the Modernisme movement that transformed Catalan culture at the turn of the twentieth century. Trained in Barcelona and Paris, Rusiñol's most enduring paintings are his many views of the gardens of Spain — Aranjuez, La Granja, Generalife, Mallorca — which he depicted in a soft, decorative Symbolist manner. He founded the Cau Ferrat museum in Sitges and hosted the Modernisme festivals that defined the movement.

Artistic Style

Rusiñol painted with soft, decorative handling, muted blues and silvery greens, and a Symbolist sensitivity to atmosphere and absence. His garden views emphasize architectural detail, fountains, and pathways under filtered Mediterranean light.

Historical Significance
