Solomon was one of the most ambitious British academic painters of his generation and a pioneer of military camouflage in WWI, whose theoretical writings shaped Allied practice.
Biography
Solomon Joseph Solomon (1860–1927) was a British painter of historical, biblical, and society portrait subjects, and a founding member of the New English Art Club. Trained at the Royal Academy Schools, in Munich, and in Paris under Cabanel, he produced ambitious Salon-style canvases such as Cassandra, Niobe, and Ajax and Cassandra. During the First World War he played a key role in developing British Army camouflage. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1906.
Artistic Style
Solomon worked in a vigorous late-academic manner with strong drawing, theatrical light, and saturated color, blending British classical-revival subject matter with the technique of the French ateliers.
