Biography

Theodor Aman (1831–1891) was a Romanian painter, engraver, and educator who founded the National School of Fine Arts in Bucharest in 1864 and is considered the founder of modern Romanian art education. Trained in Paris, Aman produced ambitious history paintings on Romanian medieval and early modern subjects, intimate genre scenes of Bucharest bourgeois life, and self-portraits in the academic French manner.

Artistic Style

Aman painted in a polished academic manner with firm drawing, sober palettes, and careful attention to historical costume. His genre scenes show the influence of Meissonier in their precise observation of bourgeois interior detail.
