Trained in Madrid and Rome, he made his name with elegantly painted historical and society subjects in the manner of his close friend Mariano Fortuny, before taking up the directorship of the Spanish Academy in Rome (1881–1893) and finally the Prado (1894–1896).

Artistic Style

Palmaroli painted with brilliant Fortuny-influenced finish, refined drawing, and a luminous, jewel-like palette. His subjects span elegant society portraits, costume genre, and historical anecdote.
