Born in Copenhagen, he trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and became a regular exhibitor whose specialty was the Danish landscape — particularly the coastlines and interior lakes of Jutland and the fjords of Funen. Works like A Winter's Evening by a Danish Fiord (1875), The Beach at Kandestederne, West Jutland (1877), Summer Evening near Ry (1873), The Lakes at Laven near Silkeborg (1875), and A View of Isefjorden (1888) exemplify his preferred subjects: water, sky, and a low horizon in which the specific atmospheric quality of the Danish coastal environment is captured with quiet fidelity. He was a professor at the Royal Academy and an influential teacher for several decades.
