Biography
Willem Linnig Junior (1842-1890) was a Belgian painter, son of the marine and genre painter Willem Linnig Senior, who worked in Antwerp. Born in Antwerp into an artistic family, he trained under his father and at the Antwerp Academy. His works represent a conventional academic practice: Storm Landscape (1875), Landscape (1875), and a Self-portrait in his studio (1875) from his early career, alongside later works including Vegetables (1886), Enchantment (1886), and Still Life with Pastries (1886). The range of his subjects — landscapes, still lifes, a self-portrait — suggests a versatile painter without a single dominant specialisation. He worked in Antwerp and maintained a modest career within the Belgian academic tradition.
Artistic Style
Linnig Junior worked in a competent academic realist style within the Belgian tradition. His landscapes show solid naturalistic observation; his still lifes demonstrate careful attention to the textures and surfaces of food and domestic objects. His self-portrait in the studio follows established conventions of artist self-representation. His work is technically accomplished without being innovative.
Historical Significance
Linnig Junior was a modest figure in Belgian academic painting of the late nineteenth century. Limited documentation survives about his career beyond his exhibited works. He represents the mainstream of Antwerp academic painting in the 1870s-80s.
