A Calm Sea with Two Fishing Boats, a Man of War Firing a Salute Beyond by Willem van de Velde the Younger

A Calm Sea with Two Fishing Boats, a Man of War Firing a Salute Beyond

Willem van de Velde the Younger·

Historical Context

Mount Edgcumbe House in Cornwall, overlooking Plymouth Sound and the English Channel, was an ideal setting for collecting marine paintings: its owners watched actual fleets pass from their windows. This canvas showing two fishing boats in the foreground with a man-of-war firing a salute beyond encapsulates Van de Velde's skill at combining humble working craft with naval grandeur in a single composition. Fishing boats and warships shared the same coastal waters but inhabited radically different social and economic worlds, and their juxtaposition was a staple of Dutch marine convention, underlining the interdependence of trade, fishery, and naval protection. The saluting warship in the distance provides a narrative spark — something is being acknowledged or celebrated — while the fishing boats in the calm foreground provide a timeless, unhurried counterpoint. The undated canvas was likely produced in Van de Velde's London studio, where his assistants helped manage the considerable output of works for English aristocratic collections.

Technical Analysis

Canvas with a balanced three-part structure: foreground fishing craft on glassy water, middle-ground open sea, and background warship with gun smoke. The still-water foreground uses minimal impasto, while the cannon smoke is more thickly worked. Pale warm light suggests morning or afternoon rather than dramatic sunset.

Look Closer

  • ◆The gun smoke from the man-of-war drifts in a lazy curve indicating only a light breeze — consistent with the near-calm conditions shown on the water surface.
  • ◆Fishing nets or gear stowed at the stern of the nearest boat are rendered with careful attention to rope texture and colour.
  • ◆The contrast in scale between the small foreground fishing craft and the distant warship emphasises the latter's size without distorting the spatial logic.
  • ◆Subtle cloud shadows move across the middle sea, breaking up what might otherwise be an overly uniform expanse of grey-blue water.
