A Gentleman in a Gray Cape over a Gold-Embroidered Coat by Rosalba Carriera

A Gentleman in a Gray Cape over a Gold-Embroidered Coat

Rosalba Carriera·1715

Historical Context

Dating from 1715 and held in Dresden, this portrait of an unknown gentleman in a gray cape over a gold-embroidered coat is among the early works Carriera made before her Paris visit transformed her celebrity. Male portraiture requiring fine dress descriptions was a significant component of her output, and the combination of a cool gray outer garment with a warm gold-embroidered coat beneath offered exactly the kind of chromatic contrast she handled with particular skill. The sitter's identity is unknown, but the quality of his dress marks him as a member of the upper levels of society — whether Venetian noble, foreign diplomat, or visitor. The 1715 date places this in the period when Carriera was consolidating her position as Venice's pre-eminent portraitist, building the reputation that would bring Augustus the Strong's representatives to seek her work for the Dresden collections.

Technical Analysis

The gray cape and gold embroidery present contrasting technical challenges: the gray requires subtle tonal differentiation to avoid flatness, while the gold embroidery must be described with sufficient precision to read as woven metallic thread. Carriera uses a slightly metallic yellow-white highlight on the embroidery to convey the shimmer of gold thread.

Look Closer

  • ◆Gray cape and gold embroidery present contrasting textural and colouristic challenges in a single composition
  • ◆Subtle metallic highlights distinguish the embroidered gold from plain fabric in the sitter's dress
  • ◆The 1715 date marks Carriera's period of Venetian consolidation before her international celebrity of the 1720s
  • ◆Unknown sitter identity in an early work reflects the attrition of documentary evidence over three centuries
