A Tyrolean Innkeeper by Rosalba Carriera

A Tyrolean Innkeeper

Rosalba Carriera·1728

Historical Context

Dating from 1728 and held in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, 'A Tyrolean Innkeeper' is an unusual departure for Rosalba Carriera — a genre subject rather than a portrait of a named, socially elevated sitter. The eighteenth century saw a growing taste for images of 'character heads' and genre figures alongside formal portraiture, and Carriera's skill in capturing facial expression made her well-suited to this mode. A Tyrolean innkeeper would have carried associations of Alpine rusticity, folk costume, and the picturesque travel culture that was beginning to develop among educated Europeans. Dresden's Gemäldegalerie was one of the great collecting institutions of the era, and its holdings of Carriera's work — assembled partly through the patronage of Augustus III — form the largest museum collection of her pastels in the world. This work demonstrates that even within her dominantly society-portrait practice, Carriera was alert to the expressive possibilities of non-aristocratic subjects, lending them the same attentive characterisation she brought to her grander commissions.

Technical Analysis

Genre subjects allowed Carriera to work more freely than in formal portraiture, and this figure shows her using the pastel medium's textural range to evoke rougher fabric and weathered skin alongside the usual refinement. The costume details — a regional hat or jacket — are rendered with specificity that suggests she worked from a live model or careful study.

Look Closer

  • ◆Genre subject matter is rare in Carriera's oeuvre, making this a significant departure from her portrait practice
  • ◆Fabric textures appear coarser and more freely handled than in her aristocratic commissions
  • ◆The Tyrolean costume is observed with ethnographic specificity suggesting direct or careful second-hand study
  • ◆Dresden holds the world's largest museum collection of Carriera pastels, contextualising this within a major group
