Altarpiece of St Cathrine's Church, Zwickau [predella] by Lucas Cranach the Elder

Altarpiece of St Cathrine's Church, Zwickau [predella]

Lucas Cranach the Elder·1518

Historical Context

The predella of the Zwickau St Catherine's Church Altarpiece (1518) forms the base element of the altarpiece's complete program — typically a horizontal panel showing a narrative scene or devotional image that completed the theological statement of the altarpiece as a whole. The survival of the Zwickau altarpiece predella in the Katharinenkirche alongside the other component panels is exceptional: altarpiece predella panels were the most vulnerable element of any multi-panel program, often the first to be removed, damaged, or dispersed when altarpieces were dismantled. Cranach's 1518 Zwickau altarpiece commission represents one of the most complete surviving programs from his pre-Reformation production, the multiple panels together documenting his ability to conceive and execute a coherent iconographic program across multiple formats — wings, fixed wings, upper panels, and predella — within a unified compositional and theological framework.

Technical Analysis

The predella's horizontal format — wide and relatively low — determined a different compositional approach from the vertical panels of wings and central image. Cranach arranges figures across the width of the predella panel, creating a frieze-like composition appropriate for narrative scenes like the Last Supper or Pietà.

Look Closer

  • ◆Notice the predella's horizontal format: the base panel of an altarpiece runs the full width of the main section, requiring a panoramic compositional approach.
  • ◆Look at how Cranach adapts his compositional logic for this elongated horizontal format compared to the taller vertical panels above.
  • ◆Find the narrative or devotional content Cranach includes in the predella: traditionally this strip contained scenes from a saint's life or a narrative sequence.
  • ◆Observe how the predella functions as the altarpiece's foundation, its content theologically grounding the panels above.
