An Bord des Donaudampfers Maria Anna
Rudolf von Alt·1837
Historical Context
Rudolf von Alt's 1837 oil painting depicting life on board the Danube steamship Maria Anna records an early moment in the mechanisation of one of Europe's great river routes. Steam navigation on the Danube had begun in 1829 with the establishment of the Erste Donau-Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft (DDSG), and by 1837 paddle steamers were transforming Danube travel from a slow, arduous journey into a relatively comfortable passage connecting Vienna with Linz, Budapest, and ultimately the Black Sea. The Maria Anna was one of the early DDSG vessels, and Alt's decision to document on-board life — passengers assembled on deck, the social world of the steamer journey — places him as a chronicler of technological modernity as well as architectural heritage. The work is now held in the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München, one of Germany's premier collections of works on paper and related artistic media.
Technical Analysis
The on-board composition presents Alt with an unusual spatial challenge: the curved deck of the vessel, the masts and rigging above, and the passing Danube landscape beyond the railings. The oil-on-canvas medium allows for the tonal range needed to distinguish the warm interior social space from the cooler exterior river landscape. Figures in period dress are more carefully characterised than in Alt's typical topographic work.
