Painted in 1899, 'Approaching Storm, Valencia' captures the dramatic meteorological moment when a storm front moves in from the Mediterranean — a subject that allowed Sorolla to explore his luminism in reverse, examining how light transforms when the sun is extinguished by cloud and the atmosphere charges with electrical energy. Storm light has a particular quality in Mediterranean settings: the contrast between the last intense sunlight on the water and the advancing darkness of the storm front creates a visual drama unlike any other atmospheric condition. Sorolla had been painting the Valencia beach since the early 1890s, and by 1899 he was sufficiently familiar with its meteorological character to depict not just settled conditions but the full range of atmospheric states.
