April (Taurus) by Francesco Bassano the Younger

April (Taurus)

Francesco Bassano the Younger·1601

Historical Context

Francesco Bassano the Younger's April (Taurus), painted in 1601, captures the month of renewed agricultural activity when the ground had dried sufficiently for ploughing and sowing, and when the natural world showed the most dramatic signs of seasonal renewal. April in the Veneto meant the preparation of fields for spring crops, the lambing season that gave Taurus its bovine symbol its pastoral context, and the blossoming of orchards and early spring flowers. Taurus's bull appears in the zodiacal calendar alongside these agricultural scenes, its association with bovine strength reflecting the importance of oxen as draught animals in the spring ploughing that April demanded. The Prado series' April canvas falls at the heart of the spring sequence, between March's first cautious stirrings and May's established growth. As part of the complete months programme, April contributes to the Bassano workshop's comprehensive visual inventory of the agricultural year's emotional and practical rhythms.

Technical Analysis

April's palette emphasises the fresh, tentative greens of emerging vegetation and the pale washes of spring sky, capturing a seasonal moment before the full saturation of May and June. Ploughing oxen in the foreground provide the month's primary activity, with the spring landscape background showing blossoming trees and the first growth of field crops. The Taurus bull symbol is integrated into the composition's agricultural context.
