Archibald Douglas (1773–1848) by William Beechey

Archibald Douglas (1773–1848)

William Beechey·1791

Historical Context

William Beechey's portrait of Archibald Douglas (1773–1848) documents a member of one of the great Scottish noble families at the turn of the nineteenth century. Douglas was connected to the illustrious Douglas family that had played a central role in Scottish history for centuries, and his portrait by the King's Painter was an appropriate marker of social position. Beechey produced many such portraits for the Scottish and English aristocracy during his long career (1753–1839), maintaining a steady practice in professional male portraiture alongside his celebrated portraits of women and children.

Technical Analysis

The composition follows Beechey's standard formula — three-quarter view, formal dress, landscape or plain background, confident bearing. Face and hands are the most carefully painted areas, with clothing summarised in broader but controlled strokes.
