Portrait of the Maistre Sisters
Antoine-Jean Gros·1796
Historical Context
Gros's Portrait of the Maistre Sisters from 1796 was painted just before his encounter with Napoleon transformed his career, when the young artist was still establishing himself in Genoa during the Italian campaign. The double portrait shows two young women in the neoclassical dress fashionable among French-influenced society in Italy, their poses and relationship conveying sisterly warmth within a formal compositional framework. Gros had trained under David but would surpass his master in the emotional dynamism and coloristic richness of his battle paintings. This early portrait shows his technical facility and psychological sensitivity while still operating within the restrained Davidian idiom, before Napoleon's campaigns opened new possibilities for grand historical painting and made Gros the official chronicler of imperial glory.
Technical Analysis
The oil on canvas displays Gros's sensitive handling of flesh tones and textiles, with soft lighting that creates an intimate atmosphere. The careful composition places both sisters in an engaging arrangement that reveals their individual characters.
