Assunzione della Vergine (Lotto Celana) by Lorenzo Lotto

Assunzione della Vergine (Lotto Celana)

Lorenzo Lotto·1527

Historical Context

The Assumption of the Virgin from Celana is another of Lotto’s Bergamasque works, depicting the bodily assumption of Mary into heaven. Lotto’s treatment of this Marian subject combines the monumental compositional requirements of an altarpiece with the emotional directness that characterizes his personal devotional vision. Characteristic of the artist's mature approach, the work displays nervous, charged atmosphere in portraits, symbolic objects placed with enigmatic purpose, eclectic absorption of influences from Germany, Raphael, and Giorgione, restless spatial invention.

Technical Analysis

The ascending Virgin is rendered with dynamic upward movement against a heavenly backdrop. Lotto’s vivid palette and expressive handling create a vision of divine transcendence appropriate to the subject.
