This 1888 panel set at the Villa in Poggio Piano represents Silvestro Lega in his late period, revisiting the theme of domestic outdoor leisure that had produced his most celebrated works two decades earlier. By the late 1880s Lega was working in Gabbro, Tuscany, in reduced financial circumstances, yet his painting retained remarkable freshness. Poggio Piano was a retreat in the Tuscan hills where Lega had access to the kind of cultivated garden setting — with its filtered light, shaded pathways, and women in quiet occupation — that had defined the Macchiaioli ideal of capturing contemporary Italian life without grandeur or melodrama. The small panel format was deliberate: it encouraged swift execution and sensitivity to passing light. Lega's late garden and villa scenes compress the atmosphere of an entire Tuscan afternoon into a few square centimetres of panel, relying on the viewer's recognition of familiar rhythms of rural domestic life rather than literary or historical narrative.

Panel works from Lega's late period show a confident directness in paint application. Colour is laid down in distinct patches rather than blended transitions, with warm sunlit areas set against cool shadows in the Macchiaioli manner.
