Bathing by Félix Vallotton

Bathing

Félix Vallotton·1899

Historical Context

"Bathing" of 1899 continues Vallotton's sustained interest in the female nude in outdoor settings, developed through the 1890s as part of his Nabi practice. Following the success of "Bathing on a Summer Evening" (1893), he returned repeatedly to bathers as subjects — not to celebrate feminine beauty in the academic tradition but to examine the nude figure with the same cool, observational register he applied to everything else. The 1899 picture belongs to a moment when Vallotton was consolidating his reputation both as a printmaker and as a painter of domestic and semi-private scenes. The bather subject also allowed him to work with formal problems: the integration of figure and natural setting without recourse to Impressionist atmospheric dissolve. His bathers retain their solid contours even within light-saturated outdoor settings, maintaining the figure's integrity as a formal element. The picture connects to a long tradition of bather subjects running from Courbet through Cézanne, but Vallotton's resolution is distinctly his own.

Technical Analysis

Oil on canvas with smooth, controlled execution. The nude figure is painted with simplified tonal modelling, outline maintained even in light-filled areas. The surrounding natural setting is handled with the same economy as the figure, with vegetation resolved as flat colour zones rather than individually described leaves and branches.

Look Closer

  • ◆The figure's contour remains hard and defined against the background, resisting the atmospheric integration sought by Impressionist painters
  • ◆Water, where present, is represented as a flat reflective surface with minimal spatial recession
  • ◆Flesh tones in the figure are built from a narrow tonal range, creating solidity through restraint rather than dramatic contrast
  • ◆Foliage or landscape elements are treated as abstract shapes rather than botanically described forms
