Beauté romane by William-Adolphe Bouguereau

Beauté romane

William-Adolphe Bouguereau·1904

Historical Context

Beauté romane — Romanesque Beauty — from 1904 is a late figure study with a title evoking medieval or Romanesque aesthetic associations. By this late point in his career Bouguereau was working increasingly in a mode of idealised figure study with loosely attached allegorical or historical titles, the subject matter providing a frame for the continuing exploration of the idealised female figure that had been his lifelong project. The 'Romanesque' designation might refer to a hairstyle, a costume element, or a facial type associated with medieval France as seen through nineteenth-century eyes.

Technical Analysis

The technical approach remains characteristic of late Bouguereau: smooth, blended modelling of the flesh tones, careful drawing of the facial features, and a luminous, controlled light source that emphasises the face's porcelain-like surface. Whatever historical suggestion the title carries is expressed through costume or accessory rather than any departure from his established method.
