Bildnis Augustus III von Polen (1696-1763)
Rosalba Carriera·1750
Historical Context
Augustus III of Poland, Elector of Saxony and one of the greatest art collectors of the eighteenth century, appears here in a 1750 Carriera portrait — by which point the artist was herself over seventy and her eyesight largely gone. The work, without a recorded current collection, may be a late studio work, a copy after an earlier likeness, or a commemorative image rather than a direct sitting. Augustus III succeeded his father Augustus the Strong in 1733 and continued the extraordinary collecting enterprise that built the Dresden Gemäldegalerie into a world-class institution, acquiring Raphael's Sistine Madonna and many other masterpieces. His relationship with Rosalba Carriera's work was primarily through his father's collecting, but his court at Dresden continued to value Venetian art and maintained connections with Italian artists through his long reign.
Technical Analysis
Royal portraiture in Carriera's manner required clear markers of rank alongside personal characterisation. By 1750 her technical output may have relied more heavily on assistants or studio help given her near-blindness, and the handling of formal royal attributes — decoration, dress, bearing — would have needed careful supervision to maintain accuracy.

- ◆Augustus III's role as one of history's great art collectors is the implicit context for any image made under his reign
- ◆The 1750 date raises questions about how directly Carriera herself executed this given her advancing blindness
- ◆Without a current collection record, the work's precise history and current location remain uncertain
- ◆The Dresden collections Augustus assembled would eventually include hundreds of Carriera's works by his family's patronage
