Campo Santa Maria Formosa
Canaletto·1735
Historical Context
This 1735 view of Campo Santa Maria Formosa, now at Woburn Abbey in the Duke of Bedford's collection, captures one of Venice's largest and most characterful public squares — an irregular space dominated by Mauro Codussi's Renaissance church with its unusual dual facade on different axes. Santa Maria Formosa was the traditional site of the annual Doge's procession to the church on Candlemas, and its campo served as one of Venice's major neighborhood gathering spaces, hosting markets, games, and civic life at a remove from the tourist circuits of San Marco. The Bedford collection at Woburn, assembled partly through Joseph Smith's Venetian agency, demonstrates the systematic acquisition strategies of England's grandest Whig aristocrats in the mid-eighteenth century: by 1735, Canaletto views had become standard furnishings for the great country house interior, their topographical precision and warm Venetian light providing both cultural cachet and visual pleasure. Canaletto's campo views have proven particularly valuable to urban historians, documenting Venice's secondary spaces — the wells, street furniture, shops, and passing figures — that more spectacular panoramic views excluded.
Technical Analysis
Canaletto employs careful one-point perspective to render the irregular campo, with the church facade and surrounding palazzi creating an architectural frame. The figures are placed to activate the space and suggest daily Venetian routines.
