Christ Enthroned by Emmanuel Tzanes

Christ Enthroned

Emmanuel Tzanes·1664

Historical Context

Emmanuel Tzanes painted this Christ Enthroned in 1664, a quintessential subject of Byzantine iconography showing Christ as Pantocrator (Ruler of All) seated on a heavenly throne. Working in Venice for the Greek diaspora community, Tzanes maintained the theological precision demanded by Orthodox icon painting while incorporating elements of Western Baroque style. The work reflects the ongoing vitality of the Cretan school of icon painting even after the fall of Crete to the Ottomans in 1669.

Technical Analysis

The icon follows the traditional Byzantine formula of the frontally enthroned Christ holding the gospel book with his left hand while blessing with his right. Tzanes adds Western spatial depth and volumetric modeling while preserving the gold ground and hieratic presence essential to Orthodox devotional imagery.
