Christ in the Temple by Hans Leonhard Schäufelein

Christ in the Temple

Hans Leonhard Schäufelein·1520

Historical Context

Hans Leonhard Schäufelein's Christ in the Temple depicts the twelve-year-old Jesus impressing the learned doctors with his knowledge, the only Gospel narrative of Christ's childhood between the Nativity and adult ministry. Schäufelein, working in Nördlingen after his training in Dürer's Nuremberg workshop, brought the Dürer school's precise draftsmanship and clear compositional organization to religious narrative subjects for his regional patrons. This scene's combination of architectural setting, multiple figures representing various ages and reactions, and the central dramatic confrontation between childhood and authority provided ample opportunity for his narrative painting skills.

Technical Analysis

The devotional composition is rendered with attention to the expressive and contemplative qualities that served the painting's function as an aid to prayer and meditation.
