Christ on the Cross with Saints Vincent Ferrer, John the Baptist, Mark and Antoninus
Historical Context
The Master of the Fiesole Epiphany is named for an Adoration of the Magi painted for a church at Fiesole above Florence, and his Christ on the Cross with Saints Vincent Ferrer, John the Baptist, Mark, and Antoninus belongs to the Florentine devotional altarpiece tradition of the late fifteenth century. The inclusion of Vincent Ferrer — the Dominican preacher canonised in 1455 — and Antoninus of Florence — the Dominican archbishop canonised in 1523 but already revered locally — suggests a Dominican commission at a Florence church with ties to the Order. The programme of saints flanking the Crucifixion creates a meditation on Dominican sanctity alongside the central Passion image.
Technical Analysis
The Master employs the Florentine tempera and oil tradition of the 1480s–90s, placing the large crucifix as a vertical axis with the four saints in two pairs flanking. The saints are individualised through their attributes and habits — the Dominican white and black of Vincent and Antoninus visible against the more varied dress of the Baptist and Mark. Landscape background opens behind the cross.
