Christ the Redeemer by Andrea Mantegna

Christ the Redeemer

Andrea Mantegna·1493

Historical Context

Andrea Mantegna's Christ the Redeemer, painted around 1493 and housed in the Civic Museum of Correggio, depicts the resurrected Christ displaying his wounds in a devotional image format. The work dates to Mantegna's late period when he was the established court painter to the Gonzaga in Mantua. The Man of Sorrows/Redeemer type served as an object of meditation on Christ's sacrifice, inviting the viewer to contemplate the physical reality of the Passion.

Technical Analysis

Mantegna renders Christ's figure with his characteristic sculptural precision, using precise anatomical drawing and stone-like modeling that gives the resurrected body the monumental presence of a classical statue.
