The Adoration of the Magi
Giovanni di Paolo·1440–45
Historical Context
The Adoration of the Magi, painted between 1440 and 1445, depicts the visit of the three kings to the Christ Child, one of the most frequently painted subjects in Italian art. Giovanni di Paolo's version reflects the elaborate courtly processions that Sienese artists excelled at representing, with richly dressed kings and their retinues forming a colorful cavalcade. The subject allowed artists to display their skill in depicting luxury textiles, exotic figures, and complex narrative compositions.
Technical Analysis
The tempera and gold on wood panel creates a richly decorative surface with jewel-like colors and gilded accents. Giovanni di Paolo's characteristic spatial compression pushes the figures close to the picture plane while the procession recedes into a stylized landscape background.
