Princess Marie d'Orléans in Her Studio
Ary Scheffer·c. 1838
Historical Context
Ary Scheffer's portrait of Princess Marie d'Orléans in Her Studio from around 1838 depicts the artistically gifted daughter of King Louis-Philippe sculpting in her atelier. The princess, who died tragically young in 1839, was a talented sculptor whose work was exhibited at the Salon. Scheffer, as painter to the Orleanist court, had unique access to the royal family and produced this intimate portrait that celebrates both the princess's artistic vocation and her social position.
Technical Analysis
Scheffer's oil-on-fabric technique demonstrates the soft, atmospheric style of his mature period, with warm lighting illuminating the princess's face and hands at work. The intimate setting and naturalistic palette create an unusually personal image of royal portraiture.
Provenance
Noémi Renan, niece of the artist. Shepherd Gallery, New York. Sold in 1975 to Mr. and Mrs. Noah L. Butkin, Cleveland. Given to the CMA in 1977.
