Virgin and Child with Angels
Neri di Bicci·after 1460
Historical Context
Neri di Bicci painted this Virgin and Child with Angels after 1460, from his prolific workshop in Florence that produced altarpieces and devotional paintings for churches and private patrons throughout Tuscany. Neri di Bicci, whose detailed workshop diary (Ricordanze) survives, was the third generation of a painting dynasty and one of the most productive Florentine artists of the Quattrocento. His conservative style preserved the devotional conventions established by his grandfather Lorenzo di Bicci.
Technical Analysis
The tempera on wood demonstrates the traditional Florentine workshop technique with clear, bright colors and careful gold leaf application. Neri di Bicci's smooth, competent execution maintains the devotional clarity valued by his ecclesiastical patrons, prioritizing legibility over innovation.
