Columba-Altar: Darbringung im Tempel
Historical Context
This Presentation in the Temple from the Columba Altarpiece, in the Bavarian State Painting Collections, completes the three-panel altarpiece that is among Rogier's greatest works. The scene depicts the purification of the Virgin and the recognition of the Christ child by the aged Simeon Rogier van der Weyden combined exquisite emotional intensity with compositional clarity, making him the most influential Flemish painter of the mid-fifteenth century.
Technical Analysis
The temple interior is rendered with architectural precision, its Gothic forms echoing the ecclesiastical setting of the altarpiece's intended installation. The elderly Simeon's emotional response to the infant Christ creates the scene's dramatic center.
