Comida en la barca

Painted in 1897, 'Comida en la barca' — 'Meal in the Boat' — depicts figures eating within or beside a fishing vessel on the Valencia coast, a subject combining the domesticity of the shared meal with the working environment of the fishing community. By 1897 Sorolla was moving away from the social critique of his earlier work toward a more purely observational mode, but subjects like this one retained a social awareness of the fishing community's daily rhythms. The meal shared on or beside the boat was a habitual element of the fishing day — a pause within the physical labour of the sea that temporarily domesticated the masculine working environment. Sorolla captured this boundary moment with the directness that characterised his mature approach to social subjects: neither romanticising the labour nor sentimentalising the poverty, simply observing the specific visual facts of the moment. By 1897 his technique had developed the fluency and confidence of his mature outdoor style, and canvases from this period show him fully in command of his chromatic language.

The boat's interior or its immediate vicinity created a more enclosed compositional space than the open beach — the wooden hull, fishing tackle, and gathered figures producing a denser, more complex arrangement than Sorolla's panoramic sea and sand subjects. The specific textures of weathered timber and fishing gear required differentiated paint handling.
