Deposition of Christ by Benozzo Gozzoli

Deposition of Christ

Benozzo Gozzoli·1491

Historical Context

Benozzo Gozzoli's Deposition of Christ, painted in 1491 and now in the Museo Horne, Florence, is a late work by the painter famed for his Journey of the Magi frescoes in the Medici Palace. Gozzoli, who had trained with Fra Angelico and worked on the Vatican frescoes, maintained a busy career into old age. This Deposition dates to the final years of his life and shows him working in a more subdued manner than his earlier, brilliantly decorative style.

Technical Analysis

Gozzoli's late technique shows a more restrained palette than his earlier decorative manner, with careful attention to the emotional gravity of the Deposition scene and competent spatial arrangement of the mourning figures.
