Der Traunsee
Rudolf von Alt·1840
Historical Context
Rudolf von Alt's 1840 watercolour of the Traunsee, now in the Albertina, depicts one of the most celebrated Alpine lakes in the Salzkammergut — a region of dramatic mountain scenery southeast of Salzburg that was increasingly popular with Romantic-era tourists and artists. The Traunsee, with its steep flanking mountains, deep cold water, and the lakeside town of Gmunden with its distinctive castle on an island, offered a landscape that combined the Burkean sublime with more accessible picturesque beauty. The Salzkammergut was a particular favourite of the Habsburg court and Viennese bourgeoisie: Emperor Franz Joseph made Bad Ischl his summer residence, and the whole region became associated with Austrian Romantic leisure culture. Alt was a devoted chronicler of this landscape across his long career, returning repeatedly to the lakes, valleys, and mountain scenery of Upper Austria. The Albertina's holding of this work reflects the close relationship between Alt's topographic output and Vienna's great institutional collections of works on paper.
Technical Analysis
Alt exploits the lake's horizontal calm as a foil for the dramatic vertical thrust of the mountains. The composition is structured around the reflection in the still water, doubling the mountain profiles and creating a meditative symmetry. Cool blue-grey washes describe the mountain surfaces, while the lake is rendered with horizontal strokes that suggest both depth and stillness.
Look Closer
- ◆The still lake surface mirrors the mountain profiles in a near-perfect reflection that doubles the landscape's vertical drama
- ◆Gmunden's lakeside buildings and the castle on its peninsula are visible on the far shore
- ◆Cool blue-grey mountain tones contrast with warmer greens of the lower forested slopes
- ◆The horizontal format of the lake occupies roughly half the composition, asserting its calm against the mountain drama above
