Edward Simeon (1758–1812) by William Beechey

Edward Simeon (1758–1812)

William Beechey·1808

Historical Context

William Beechey painted this portrait of Edward Simeon in 1808, during the height of his career as Portrait Painter to Queen Charlotte. Beechey had been knighted in 1798 after exhibiting a massive equestrian portrait of George III reviewing troops, and his practice consisted largely of aristocrats, military officers, and political figures of the Georgian establishment. Characteristic of Beechey's approach, the work displays solid, reliable portraiture in the Grand Manner tradition, clear characterization, formal dignity.

Technical Analysis

Beechey employs the standard three-quarter format of English grand manner portraiture, with warm flesh tones set against a dark neutral background. The brushwork is confident but restrained, prioritizing likeness and social presence.
