Elizabeth (1735–1806), Lady Bridgeman, afterwards Lady Bradford
Historical Context
Elizabeth Bridgeman, later Lady Bradford, was a British aristocratic woman whose portrait by Liotard is now held at Weston Park in Shropshire. Weston Park itself was the Bridgeman family seat, making this an unusually direct connection between portrait and place — the painting has remained in the house for which it was presumably made. Liotard worked in England on two visits, in the 1750s and early 1770s, where he found a receptive audience among British collectors fascinated by his continental celebrity and his exotic personal appearance. British aristocratic portraiture of this period was dominated by Reynolds and Gainsborough, and Liotard's more restrained, continental style offered a pointed contrast. Elizabeth's portrait would have served both as a record of her identity for the family archive and as a display of taste and cultivation in the domestic interior of Weston Park.
Technical Analysis
Canvas-based portrait in Liotard's controlled continental style, distinct from the more atmospheric handling typical of British contemporaries. Colour is precise and local rather than atmospheric, and the face is modelled with consistent directional light characteristic of the artist's empirical approach.
