Ernest Cassel

Ernest Cassel, rendered in watercolour in 1886, records one of the notable figures of late-Victorian finance: Sir Ernest Cassel was a German-born banker who became one of the wealthiest men in Britain, a close friend of the Prince of Wales, and a major philanthropist. Zorn was in London in the mid-1880s building his international portraiture practice, and access to a figure of Cassel's standing reflected both his growing social connections and the speed with which his reputation as a watercolour portraitist was advancing. The choice of watercolour for such a significant sitter was itself a statement of confidence in the medium's capacity to convey authority and character — a challenge Zorn relished. The 1886 date places the work early in Cassel's rise to prominence, and the portrait would have circulated within the Anglo-Jewish financial and social elite that Cassel inhabited, extending Zorn's network of potential portrait patrons.
