Evangelisten-Tondi, Hl. Markus by Bronzino

Evangelisten-Tondi, Hl. Markus

Bronzino·1525

Historical Context

Bronzino's Evangelists Tondo with Saint Mark belongs to a series of circular panel paintings depicting the four Evangelists, likely designed for a specific architectural program such as pendentives, lunettes, or a ceiling decoration. The tondo format, adapted from both classical relief sculpture and Renaissance architectural decoration, required compositional solutions different from rectangular panel painting, and Bronzino's elegant figure style adapts naturally to the circular field. Mark is traditionally depicted with his lion symbol and his Gospel manuscript, and Bronzino's version gives this Evangelist the same cool aristocratic presence he brought to all his figure types.

Technical Analysis

The tondo format required skillful compositional adaptation, and Bronzino's rendering shows the luminous, cool palette and precisely modeled forms that reflect both Pontormo's teaching and his own emerging artistic identity.
