"Femme lisant à la fenêtre" (Woman Reading at the Window), painted in 1904, is one of Vallotton's recurrent subjects: a woman absorbed in a book, positioned at the junction between private interior and the world outside. The window setting charges the composition with implied threshold — between inside and outside, between the woman's inner world of reading and the social world beyond the glass. This kind of psychological enclosure is characteristic of Vallotton's domestic interiors, which consistently observe women in states of absorption that render them unavailable to the viewer. The reading woman connects to a long tradition from Dutch seventeenth-century painting (Vermeer's letter-readers and writers) through nineteenth-century French paintings of feminine leisure. Vallotton's treatment strips the subject of its conventional warmth, giving the woman's absorption a quality of withdrawal rather than contentment.
