This undated canvas — 'Fischerfrauen am Strand' ('Fisherwomen on the Beach') — belongs to the sustained series of works Sorolla dedicated to the working women of the Valencia coast, whose labour was as essential to the fishing economy as that of the men who worked offshore. Sorolla had a long-standing commitment to documenting this working female community, having painted related subjects since the 1890s and continuing to return to them throughout his career. The fisherwomen who repaired nets, carried catches, and managed the beach-side aspects of the trade did their work in full public view on the beach — making them naturally available as subjects to an artist who worked primarily out of doors. Unlike genre scenes that aestheticised rural labour for bourgeois consumption, Sorolla's fisherwomen carry a specificity of observation that resists easy sentimentalisation. The German title suggests this work too found its way into the same German-speaking market that received several of his coastal canvases.

Working figures on an open beach allowed Sorolla to apply his outdoor Mediterranean technique without compositional compromise — direct sunlight, reflective sand, the physical presence of labour creating natural visual incident without artificial arrangement.
