Holy Family by Bartolomeo Montagna

Holy Family

Bartolomeo Montagna·1500

Historical Context

Bartolomeo Montagna's Holy Family in the Courtauld Gallery reflects the intimate devotional paintings that formed a significant part of his output alongside the monumental altarpieces for which he is best known. These smaller panels served the private devotional needs of Vicentine patrician families. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.

Technical Analysis

The panel shows Montagna's characteristic firm modeling and sober palette applied to an intimate domestic scale, with the sculptural clarity of his figure drawing evident even in this more personal devotional format.
