Mantegna's Infant Savior from around 1455 is a devotional image of Christ as a child blessing the viewer, a subject that combines the warmth of the bambino tradition with Mantegna's characteristic sculptural gravitas. The painting dates from his early years in Padua before his move to Mantua in 1460, when he would become court painter to the Gonzaga family. The image of the infant Christ blessing was central to Franciscan devotion, which emphasized the humanity of Christ — his birth, childhood, and suffering — as pathways to salvation.
