This 1899 oil depicting a woman in a chemise in an interior belongs to the most charged body of work in Vallotton's output: the series of intimate domestic scenes in which women are observed in private domestic space, often undressing, sleeping, or engaged in morning routines. These images were exhibited at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and attracted considerable critical attention precisely because of their combination of intimacy and emotional distance — the viewer is positioned as an observer of private feminine space but offered no sentimental or erotic reward for that observation. Vallotton's 'intimate interiors' belong to the long European tradition of the surprised woman — from Rembrandt's Bathsheba to Degas's nudes — but transform the genre through their refusal of idealization. The chemise subject was specifically associated with intimacy in the social codes of the period.
